Asphalt SCAM: We have received reports of an Asphalt laying crew that is soliciting residents for work. Please do not allow these scammers to talk you into work by saying "they have extra material left over from another job so it will be a HUGE savings" -- if you need driveway repair please call a legitimate company and or check referrals prior to giving any money to strangers!
Mail/Phone SCAM: If you receive a phone call or mail attempting to collect an outstanding bad debt that you are uncertain about-- Please confirm or check into this prior to mailing money or giving any of your payable accounts information over the phone. One recently reported Scammer is using the name "CPS Security" with a San Antonio PO Box address.
Home Invasion/Break-in in the Falconwood Subdivision (on RR12 south of the Junction): The following was reported and occurred at approximately 3 PM on 14 June 2010 in the San Marcos/Wimberley Area: Burglary: Falconwood subdivision on Falconwood Drive: Two children who were home alone heard knocking on the front door and observed a female at the front door. Both children hid in a closet and heard a noise when the back door was kicked in. They then heard a male and female voice inside the residence. They had already called their mother and 911 and mother contacted a neighbor who observed a gray colored, possibly an Astro Van in the driveway. The neighbor drove to the house and began honking his horn and a female and male got into the van which had no license plates and they drove away. The subjects were either hispanic or caucasian and no other description was given. Stolen from the residence were camera equipment and a laptop computer.
One of these children was a teenager and did the right thing by not opening the door to strangers. Please alert your children to follow the same actions that he took.
FYI on call for Highway Patrol Donation - don't do it!: Beware of calls from "supposedly" the Highway Patrol to donate to their campaign and receive the window stickers. It is a SCAM.
Neighborhood Watch Organization in RMR
We need a volunteer to replace our Neighborhood Watch coordinator. The new coordinator is needed ASAP so planning can begin for the National Night Out event held in early October.
We are also seeking volunteers to be Block Captains for the River Mountain Ranch Neighborhood Watch Program. We still need a block captain for Mount View.
The responsibilities of the block captains are:
• Be aware of any possible criminal activity or fire dangers on your block.
• Notify the police, EMS, or fire Department when necessary.
• Have a back up block captain for vacations, etc.
• Help to locate possible water sources, both current and future, on your block and help the Firewise committee determine who may be willing to allow the fire department to utilize their water source in the event of a catastrophe.
• Be aware of elderly or handicapped neighbors who might require additional assistance in the event of an emergency.

All residents of RMR, especially the Block Captains, need to be aware of suspicious activity and act as the eyes an ears for our local law enforcement. Other responsibilities for a Block Captain are to notify our neighbors of wildfire, or other emergency situations. If you see something suspicious and feel it is an emergency, call 911. Do not approach or try to apprehend them, PLEASE, for your own safety! Contact your Block Captain so he/she may notify the other neighbors. This is what is known as the telephone tree. Also, if you have a primary and secondary contact number or e-mail preference, contact your Block Captain or the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator for this update.
Our first participation in the National Night Out event which, in Texas, was October 6th (August 4th for other states). National Night Out is a time where we can visit with our neighbors, possibly have a cool beverage and pick up some educational information on home and neighborhood safety. Photos from our 6 October National Night Out event can be viewed by clicking on the link in the right side column on this page or on the Community Events & Activities page.
If you would be willing to be a block captain for your street or just want to become involved with the RMR Neighborhood Watch, please contact the RMR Neighborhood Watch, by email: firewise_data@rivermountainranch.org
